For the Beach: A Sourcebook for Summer - Grownup Edition

February 11, 2016

Three women in hats sit on a sandy beach with a young child in a blue outfit, all facing the camera. The ocean and distant hills are visible in the background under a clear sky.

As a follow up to my kid’s beach guide, I wanted to fill in some of my favorites for the beach for the older generations. Now that your kids are all ready to safely and chicly explore, we have to get you outfitted!

Towels & Blankets

Last summer I discovered Steven Alan’s amazing stripe beach blankets. I use them as beach towels and blankets on the lawn. They come in tons of great colors and stripes, are super lightweight, and are the perfect size. To hold them all at home I use my favorite Tampico linen bag, which also doubles as a great toy basket.

Beach Bags

As I said, my go-to beach bag is my Tampico- I love their Linen Beach Bag or Canvas Palace Tote, and carry both at my stores. But I also love LL Bean totes and recently discovered you can customize them in all white, which is a nice change. I just ordered some for our family summerhouse and they look super chic.

Swim Suits & Board Shorts

My all-time favorite swimsuits are Eres. They come in classic shapes and colors but every season have something cool and new. They are super expensive but they last forever and never go out of style. I also love that the tops and bottoms are sold separately so you can get the perfect size for your body. My favorites for this summer are Mouna–Gredin, Show-Obscur, Casiopee, and Cabochon.

It’s hard to find the perfect swimsuit for my picky husband, but last summer I discovered the Amaury Board Short at Steven Alan and they answered all my problems. They are the perfect fit and come in simple classic colors. Another great option is Birdwell. They come in tons of great colors as well and have been around forever.

Hats

My favorite hat this season – and every season – is the Patricia Underwood for Jenni Kayne shape that she makes for my stores. It is chic, simple and never goes out of style. At the stores, I have it in navy, black, and steel blue this season. Another great option, and a more affordable one, is J.Crew’s Panama Hat – I have been living in mine this spring and it’s great for the beach.

Espadrilles

Every spring I purchase a new pair of Soludos espadrilles. They are my favorite for summer and this year I invested in the Ikat in blue and white, Dali in solid white, and Linen in light grey. They also have great options for men. I just wish they made them for my kids!

Shades

As you have gathered by now, Benjamin makes my favorite glasses. The Kayne and the Nicole are what I live in and they come in tons of amazing colors. Another more affordable options is Warby Parker and for every pair they sell, they donate a pair to someone in need.

Cover-ups

After having two kids I definitely understand the need to a cover up! My favorite go-to cover-up is the simple Eres cotton pullover called Renee. It comes in great colors ever season and is comfortable and classic. Last summer I got really into a natural sarong that was inspired by my chic Senegalese baby-nurse, Licka. She used to wear these amazing natural cotton sarongs around the house and to sleep in and I fell in love. She made me one that I can’t take off. I realized that the Creative Woman natural towels and throws that I carry in my Brentwood Store give you the same look and I’m stocking up this summer. XXJKE
